When I was in
college I studied to be a priest. After I decided that I did not want
to lead a celibate life, I changed my course and became a doctor.
I have always been fascinated by the interplay between mind and body.
After earning my medical degree, I went into psychiatry.
During my years
of practice as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, I was often focused
on psychosexual development and its interplay with spirituality. For
several years, I was on the faculty of the Christian Institute for
the Study of Human Sexuality. My experience on the faculty helped
to crystallize the focus for my writings.
In my first book,
Contemporary Catholic Sexuality, What is Taught and What is Practiced,
I was able to express some of the shifting sexual attitudes and behaviors
occurring over the past fifty years. In this present book, I have
attempted to help parents, teachers, and clergy guide adolescents
so that they can achieve the essential goals of becoming committed
lovers and effective parents.
