Sexual
Ethics as Lived by People of God This is an unusual book. There are a raft of books out today on sexuality (just check your library or local bookstore) but I doubt there's one that approaches this subject from Dr. Perito's perspective and that explores so many sides of the issue with such clarity - and in such a slim volume. A psychiatrist, a person of inspiring and practical faith, a husband, father, grandfather, Dr. Perito speaks with practical wisdom. He both challenges and reassures. As the title suggest, this book is a discussion of teenage sexuality and a guide for parents struggling to raise their kids with the values that they believe in. On another level, it is also and exploration and expression of the subject of love itself - love of self, others and God, which Dr. Perito claims is the foundation of sexuality. As a result, "Adolescent Sexuality" becomes and inspiration as much for the parents' own lives as it is a guide in their struggle to help their adolescents grow into responsible and loving adults. In an earlier book ("Contemporary Catholic Sexuality, What is Taught and What is Practiced," Crossroad, 2004), Dr. Perito explored official Catholic Church teachings on sexuality, distinguishing them from what actually happens in the lives of faithful Catholics, In his new book he broadens his approach, exploring sexual ethics as lived not just by Catholics but by all "people of God as including those who have sincere faith and are trying to live according to their conscience." While he avoids no difficult or controversial subject (premarital sex, oral sex, masturbation, abortion, contraception, homosexuality, "hooking up,", etc., are openly discussed), there is a strong emphasis on the positive side of sexual expression, including a section entitled "Marriage, Success or Failure," which stands on it own as a guide to married couples as well as those contemplating marriage. He never skirts around the practical difficulties that face couples in marriage but spells them out in a refreshing, mater-of-fact style that turns out to be encouragement. The second half of the book contains a 100-page appendix, detailing the results of a "Sexual Attitude Survey of Adult Students" which the author administered to 90 college and university students. The students' responses to questions ranging from everything from abortion to homosexuality to premarital sex and everything in between are recorded. The purpose is to enlighten parents, to urge them to ask themselves the same questions, encouraging communication with their children. The answers will be interesting to any reader. This is a forthright and a satisfying read, offering clarity and guidance in an important and often confusing arena. Anne Storz, a member of TAC's editorial staff, lives in Hamden, Conn.
